Year 2 – Elder

Class Teacher: Miss Shoesmith

Hello,

Welcome to Year 2 Elder! I will be teaching Year 2 this year with the help of Mrs Jagger who will work in our classroom. We also have Mrs Booth and Mrs Firth who will be teaching our PE and ICT.

We have a very exciting topic to start off the Autumn term! The Greatest Showman! This topic was chosen by the children and we can’t wait to learn all about the history of the circus. We will be making big top tents, learning circus skills and helping Ally the Clown find out who his family are.  In PE we are going to be learning about gymnastic and trying out some circus skills! You are all invited to come and see us in our Circus Skills Assembly!

After Christmas we will move onto a really exciting topic called The Jungle Book! We are going to learn about lots of different animals and find out about where in the world they live. We need to know the names of the continents and oceans of the world so we will be using maps and globes to help us.  We will be learning about endangered animals and creating some art work that we can sell to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund. We hope to see you for our fundraiser in February!

The children all wanted to learn about balloons when we did our Pupil Voice questions, so we decided to create a topic based on the film ‘Up!’ We are going launch this topic with an open morning and invite you to join us with an exciting balloon investigation! Not only will we be doing lots of Science, we will be creating some lovely art work and investigating materials in Design & Technology.

And finally… Monster, Myths and Unicorns! I won’t tell you too much about this magical topic so it can be a surprise! It’s going to be a lot of fun!

In the spring term, we will have our SATS tests. These are not as scary as they sound! To make sure we are all ready for the SATS it is really important that you read every day at home and practise your spellings each week! Please make sure you bring your reading book and diary back to school each day so that it is ready for reading with an adult.

Children can change their book as often as they like so please write in their reading diaries so we can see how well they are doing at home!

We will finish of the year with a Graduation Celebration Assembly to celebrate the success of the children throughout KS1.
